JINS ASSIST is designed to be operated with small head movements, so it cannot be used while walking, running, or riding in a vehicle.
Can I use it in a supine position (lying on my back)?
If you operate it in a position close to supine, please set Advanced Settings → Axis Type to Right Vertical Lock (if attached to the right side of your glasses) or Left Vertical Lock (if attached to the left side). This disables posture estimation, allowing operation even in a supine position.
Can I use it while leaning against a pillow or headrest?
Yes, you can.
The auxiliary software is unstable or crashes.
Please update the auxiliary app to the latest version. For the following phenomena, please take the described actions. *Version 1.2.11 or later
- The auxiliary app closes with a GPU error: Please turn off Use GPU in Advanced Settings.
- The auxiliary app crashes on startup: This occurs on devices with special language settings. If you try to launch it 3 times without agreeing to the terms of use, it will start in English-only mode.
- The selection assist pop-up becomes sluggish during long-term use: On Windows 11 (24H2), the OS may lower the execution priority during prolonged use, causing the pop-up to become sluggish. Since this cannot be addressed on the app side, please restart the auxiliary software in such cases.
Is charging required?
JINS ASSIST does not have a battery, so charging is not required. It is powered and operates via the USB cable.
Questions about Preparation Before Use
Which part of the glasses can I attach it to?
Please see Initial Setup (Attaching the attachment to glasses).
The magnet on the attachment and the main unit is weak, and the unit rotates.
Please wear the device with the cable draped over your ear. (The magnetic force is designed to consider the influence on other devices and safety in case of entanglement.)
The LED lights up or the buzzer sounds when the PC is turned off.
Depending on the PC model, some PCs supply power to the USB ports or accept mouse signals even when turned off, which may cause JINS ASSIST to enter an operational state.
JINS ASSIST does not seem to be working.
When functioning normally, about 3 seconds after connecting the JINS ASSIST main unit to a PC, the following three actions will occur:
- The LED on the main unit lights up (red, green, blue, etc.)
- The mouse cursor on the connected PC moves in a circle
- A startup sound is emitted from the main unit (unless the volume is turned off in the settings)
(Initial Setup (Startup sequence)). If the above actions do not occur even after connecting to multiple PCs, a default may be suspected. Please contact support.
It blinks red repeatedly after startup and does not work.
After startup, JINS ASSIST calculates its orientation to check if it is worn correctly. It checks the angle to prevent malfunction when it is extremely tilted, downward, or upward. It will transition to operation mode as soon as it is worn at the correct angle.
The JINS ASSIST unit is working and the cursor moves, but the auxiliary software shows it as disconnected.
In addition to the USB mouse standard (HID), the auxiliary software uses USB serial communication. If another software or security software is using or blocking the USB serial communication, it may not be able to establish a serial connection, resulting in a disconnected display.
Questions about Operation
The cursor speed is too fast.
Either slow down the Cursor speed in the settings app's Cursor Settings, or reduce the mouse speed in your OS's mouse settings.
Can I adjust the sound volume?
You can change or disable it in the settings app under Basic Settings → Sound effect volume.
It doesn't respond to nods.
- Please check if it is waiting for a command (nod detection) (The LED will be slowly pulsing green).
- In this state, when you move your head, the cursor will respond by moving slightly in the same direction.
- After looking down, smoothly return to the original position without a pause, and then stop completely.
- Perform the nod with the image of moving the tip of your nose down 1 cm and back (it will not respond to movements like moving your whole head forward).
- Be careful, as nodding too strongly will be judged as noise and may trigger the noise stop mode.
- If you are having trouble, please refer to Initial Setup (Operation video).
The cursor is in a different direction from where I'm looking.
- JINS ASSIST moves the cursor based on the speed of your head movement, not the direction you are facing.
- Imagine operating it like a joystick.
- Moving your head faster makes the cursor move further. You can move the cursor a large distance by moving your head quickly and in a small motion, as if shooing a fly away from the tip of your nose.
- You can reset (return the cursor to the center of the screen) with any of the following operations:
- Move your head left twice back and forth (default setting, can be changed to other movements).
- Press the Esc key 3 times in a row (off by default).
- Press the reset button on the remote control panel.
The cursor moves in the opposite direction of my movement.
Please check if the axis setting is set to Auto. It will automatically determine up and down.
The cursor started moving even though I didn't nod.
During conversations or other times with frequent head movements, it may be misidentified as a nod, causing the cursor to start moving.
It doesn't enter click selection waiting or command waiting mode even if I stay still.
- In normal mode, if you keep your head still, it will always enter command waiting mode in the sequence: cursor moving → click selection (1-5 sec) → continuous flow selection (0-2 sec) → command waiting.
- Tapping JINS ASSIST lightly or shaking your head firmly will enter the noise auto-stop mode and then return to command waiting after 2 seconds.
- If you accidentally click the mode change button or a shortcut is triggered when you shake your head, it may enter Always-on Cursor Mode (LED lights up pink) or Pause Mode (LED lights up red). In these modes, it will not enter click selection waiting or command waiting mode even with the above operations. In Always-on Cursor Mode, the cursor will always sync with your head movements, and in Pause Mode, the cursor will always be stopped, and it will not switch to other modes even if you stop your head. To return to the original mode, use the mode button on the remote screen to select command waiting (normal mode) or use a shortcut to change the mode.
- If Time until click confirmation in Command Settings is set to 0 seconds, it will not enter click selection waiting mode. Please change the setting to 1 second or more, or try restoring the settings to the factory defaults. *This setting may rarely occur if JINS ASSIST is disconnected during the tutorial.
The cursor moves to a position other than the center of the screen when I reset it.
You need to configure it in advance. Please follow the instructions in Initial Setup (Adjusting settings).
I can't reset by pressing the Escape key 3 times.
By default, the Reset with 3 Esc key presses function is off. Please turn on the Reset with 3 Esc key presses function in the settings.
The Escape (Esc) key no longer works in other apps.
When the Reset with 3 Esc key presses function is on, the Escape key is exclusively used by the app, so it cannot be used in other apps. If you want to use the Escape key in other apps, please turn off the Reset with 3 Esc key presses function.
The cursor moves at a constant speed even when I'm still.
It will be corrected if you hold your head still for about 1 second (it will not be corrected if vibrations from breathing or heartbeat are transmitted to the glasses). The correction may be off when you rapidly change your gaze downwards or upwards, so in that case, please hold your head still in line with the angle to allow for correction.
On Mac/iPad, scrolling down scrolls up.
The default setting on Mac/iPad is to scroll the page up in response to a positive signal sent by the mouse, which is the opposite of the JINS ASSIST manual's explanation. To align this, please change the setting as follows.
macOS
Go to System Preferences → Mouse → Uncheck Scroll direction: Natural.
iPadOS
Go to Settings → General → Trackpad & Mouse → Turn off Natural Scrolling.
The selection assist pop-up does not appear when using multiple Spaces on Mac.
Right-click the JINS ASSIST icon in the Mac Dock and select Options → All Desktops. *Spaces is a virtual desktop feature that allows you to move between virtual desktops through the Mission Control function.
The selection assist pop-up does not appear when another app is in full-screen mode on Mac.
The full-screen function on Mac prevents other apps from being displayed in front of the active app, so the selection assist pop-up will be hidden. However, mouse operations themselves will still work, so you can operate by using the timing of the sound from JINS ASSIST.
I don't know how to operate it on iOS/iPadOS/Android.
Please refer to Various Usage Scenarios (Settings and operations specific to mobile OS).
Can I only do the tutorial once?
The tutorial is automatically displayed on the first startup. If you want to see it again, please click Tutorial on the settings screen.
My cursor stopped responding after I shook my head.
It is likely that the default shortcut for toggling pause (stop command reception) with 3 leftward shakes was activated. If the LED is solid red, it is in Pause Mode.
My cursor jumped to the center of the screen when I shook my head.
It is likely that the default shortcut for returning the cursor to the center with 2 leftward shakes was activated.
It makes a sound when I move my head strongly or walk.
JINS ASSIST is designed to react to small head movements. To prevent malfunction, it emits a sound and pauses for 2 seconds when it detects vibration. Please use it while stationary.
Can you explain the operating principle?
- It uses a gyro sensor and an accelerometer. The operating principle involves calculating the cursor's movement amount using the gyro sensor's angular velocity and estimating the device's posture with the accelerometer. The detailed logic of the calculation is not disclosed.
- It does not use eye movement or blinking.
Does it not work without the attachment?
The attachment is a part for holding the device on the glasses and is not related to the main unit's operation. It is also possible to attach ASSIST directly to metal glasses.
How does the reset to origin feature work?
- There are three ways to reset: pressing the Reset button on the screen, triggering a shortcut, or executing it when Reset on 3 Esc presses is enabled.
- When using the auxiliary app, upon a reset, the app calculates how much the cursor needs to move to get near the center of the screen, sends that value to JINS ASSIST, and executes it.
- When not using the auxiliary app, upon a reset, JINS ASSIST first moves the cursor to the top-left of the screen, and then moves it to the bottom-right by the amount stored in its settings.
- If the cursor speed is changed from the standard in the OS, or if acceleration is on, it will not move by the specified number of pixels and will move to a location other than the center.
- JINS ASSIST complies with the USB mouse specification and cannot know its own position on the screen, only being able to send relative movement amounts, which results in the behavior described above.
What settings should I change as I get used to it?
The default state of JINS ASSIST is set for first-time users (easy-to-understand reactions, longer waiting times). Once you have learned all the operations, changing the following settings will allow for faster and less tiring operation.
- Wait time until click selection: 3 seconds → 1 second (you can quickly exit if you accidentally enter cursor movement mode)
- Time until click confirmation / Time until drop confirmation: 1 level faster (cursor stop confirmation will be quicker)
- Cursor speed: 1 level faster (you can operate with less movement)
- Input type: Stricter detection (it will only register a nod when you look down, then up, and stop precisely, reducing mis-inputs)
Questions about Settings
The selection assist pop-up sometimes appears behind other windows.
It may be displayed behind functions prioritized by the OS (taskbar, start menu, on-screen keyboard), which cannot be resolved due to OS specifications. The click is actually being registered, so please operate as usual.
Can I make the mouse cursor larger?
This cannot be adjusted on the mouse side, so please change your OS settings.
Windows
Go to Start → Settings → Accessibility → Mouse pointer and touch and adjust the Size.
macOS
Go to System Preferences → Accessibility → Display and adjust the Pointer size under the Pointer section.
ChromeOS
Go to Settings → Accessibility → Check Show large mouse cursor and adjust the Cursor size.
Can I change settings for iPadOS/iOS/Android?
Settings cannot be changed on iPadOS/iOS/Android. Please perform the settings from a Windows/Mac with the auxiliary software installed. The settings are saved within JINS ASSIST.
Do I need to set it up every time I start it?
Basically, the settings are saved within JINS ASSIST, so the changed settings will be applied even if you reconnect it to another device or restart it. However, please be aware of the following cases.
Setting Item | Details |
---|---|
Normal Settings | Saved within JINS ASSIST |
Switching between Normal and Always-on Sync Mode | Starts in the mode it was in when last shut down |
Paused State | Is reset |
Custom Presets | Saved to and loaded from the PC where the auxiliary software is installed - Saving a custom preset saves the current JINS ASSIST settings to the PC - Loading a custom preset applies the preset saved on the PC to JINS ASSIST |
Can I restore the settings to the factory defaults?
Go to Advanced Settings → Load Preset → Select Standard and click the Load button to reset the settings to their initial state.
Other Questions
When I opened the package, the ASSIST unit was detached from the inner frame of the package.
The unit may become detached from the inner frame during shipping. This is not a defect, so please use it as is.
Can I purchase the attachment separately?
Separate sales of the attachment are not currently available.
